Delaware County homes and the closets they came with
Delaware County was one of Philadelphia’s first suburbs, and the age of the houses shows in the closets. Much of the eastern half grew up along trolley and rail lines in the early 1900s, while the western townships filled in after World War II and again in the last few decades. Each era has its own storage problem.
| Area and era | Typical homes | Common closet problem | What tends to fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper Darby, Drexel Hill, Lansdowne (1910s to 1930s) | Twins and rowhomes | Small, shallow bedroom closets | Reach-in with double hang and shelves to the ceiling |
| Havertown, Springfield, Broomall (1940s to 1960s) | Colonials, Cape Cods, split-levels | One rod and a wood shelf | Full reach-in system with drawers |
| Haverford, Villanova, Radnor | Stone colonials, Victorians, large homes | Sloped third-floor closets, dressing rooms | Walk-ins and wardrobes planned around the room |
| Newtown Square, Glen Mills, Garnet Valley | Newer colonials and townhomes | Wire shelving in large closets | Walk-in system with drawers and shoe storage |
Reach-in closets for twins and rowhomes
In the older parts of the county, the typical bedroom closet holds a single rod and a shelf. Everything above the shelf and below the hanging clothes is empty. A designed reach-in closet uses that space with double hanging, a long-hang section, adjustable shelves and a drawer stack. In a twin with three small bedrooms, rebuilding the closets can let a dresser leave the room entirely.
Basements in these homes are often the only other storage. Shelving, cabinets and a laundry area with folding space keep that overflow organized instead of piled on the floor.
Closets for growing families in postwar homes
The colonials, Cape Cods and split-levels of Havertown, Springfield and Broomall were built for families, but their closets were not built for today’s amount of clothing, gear and toys. Kids’ closets get the most out of adjustable designs: low rods and shelves at first, raised as the child grows, with bins on the shelves for toys that later hold sports gear. A shared bedroom can split one closet into two sides, each with its own hanging space and drawers.
Cape Cods add another challenge: upstairs bedrooms under the roof, with knee walls and short closets. Shelving and hanging planned around the slope turn those spaces into usable storage.
Walk-in closets in Main Line Delaware County
Haverford, Villanova and Radnor sit in the Delaware County part of the Main Line, with stone and Victorian homes alongside newer construction. Primary closets here are often converted rooms with windows and radiators, or walk-ins built during a renovation. We plan each wall around what it holds and what is in the way, with long hang, double hang, drawers, shoe shelves and, in larger rooms, an island.
Third-floor bedrooms in these houses often have closets under the roofline. Shorter hanging sections and shelving designed around the slope make those closets usable.
Newer homes in western Delaware County
Homes built in the last few decades in Newtown Square, Glen Mills and Garnet Valley usually have bigger closets, but they come with wire shelving that wastes height and leaves shoes on the floor. Replacing it with a designed system adds drawers, adjustable shelves and dedicated shoe storage in the same footprint.
Media, Swarthmore and the older boroughs
The county seat of Media and the college town of Swarthmore have a mix of Victorian homes, twins and early 1900s singles on walkable streets. Closets in these homes are small, and in an older home without a garage, the closets and the basement carry the storage. A designed reach-in in each bedroom, a rebuilt linen closet and a basement wall of shelving often do more for these houses than any single large project.
Pantries, garages, laundry rooms and mudrooms
Closets are only part of the storage in a house. We also design:
- Pantries with adjustable shelving and pull-out storage, so a narrow kitchen pantry holds more.
- Garage storage with cabinets, slatwall and workbenches, so tools and sports gear come off the floor. See our garage storage systems.
- Laundry rooms with cabinets, shelving and folding space.
- Mudrooms with lockers, benches, cubbies and drawers at the back or side door.
- Home offices, entertainment centers and Murphy beds for rooms that need to do more than one job.
Basements, attics and linen closets
Older Delaware County homes often store the overflow in a basement or an attic, and the linen closet in the upstairs hall is usually a stack of wood shelves too deep to see the back of. Rebuilding a linen closet with shelves at the right depth and a few drawers makes towels, sheets and supplies easy to reach. In the basement, shelving and cabinets along a wall, or a full laundry area with folding space, keep stored items off the floor and away from the washer and dryer.
What goes into every system
Every system is custom designed for the space and installed by our own team. We build with 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers, and many finishes and hardware options to match the room. Accessories include shoe shelves, jewelry drawers, belt and tie pull-outs and hampers.
You see the design before anything is built, and you can ask for changes until it fits the way you live.
What custom closet design costs in Delaware County
No two closets cost the same, because no two are the same size or hold the same things. The main factors are:
- The size of the space and how many walls get storage.
- The number of drawers, which cost more than shelves.
- The finish and hardware.
- Accessories, such as islands, shoe walls and pull-outs.
The design consultation and estimate are free, and your estimate includes the full project. Our custom closet cost guide explains each factor in more detail.
