Closets For Less designs and installs custom closets in South Jersey, with walk-ins, reach-ins, wardrobes, Murphy beds, pantries and garage storage for homes in Cherry Hill, Voorhees and Collingswood. We are based in Warminster, just across the river in Pennsylvania, and have been in business since 2007. Every project starts with a free in-home design consultation, and our own team installs it.
Closet and storage solutions for South Jersey homes
The Camden County towns closest to Philadelphia were built in waves, and you can tell the age of a house by its closets.
- Early 1900s homes in Collingswood and the older towns along the PATCO line are Victorians, foursquares, twins and bungalows. Their closets are small and shallow, and some bedrooms have none.
- Postwar homes in Cherry Hill went up from the 1950s through the 1970s: ranches, split-levels, bi-levels and colonials. The closets are a reasonable size but usually hold a single rod and a wood shelf.
- Newer homes and townhouses in Voorhees and nearby townships date mostly from the 1970s on. Their closets are larger and lined with builder wire shelving.
Each of these gets a different design, but the goal is the same: use the full height and width of the space for what you actually store.
Split-levels and bi-levels
Cherry Hill and its neighbors have many split-level and bi-level homes, where bedrooms sit half a flight up and the family room half a flight down. Bedroom closets are usually a single reach-in with bypass sliding or bifold doors, which leave part of the closet covered at any time (bypass sliders expose about half the opening, bifolds most of it; hinged doors open the full width). Planning the inside around the doors, so drawers open without hitting a door panel and each side has its own hanging and shelves, makes those closets much easier to use.
Closet systems by South Jersey home style
| Home style | Common storage problem | What tends to fit |
|---|---|---|
| Early 1900s twin or Victorian | Small, shallow closets | Reach-in with double hang and shelves to the ceiling |
| Bungalow or foursquare | Rooms under the roof | Shelving and hanging planned around the slope |
| 1950s to 1970s split-level | One rod, one shelf | Full reach-in system with a drawer stack |
| Colonial with a primary suite | Walk-in with empty walls | Walk-in with drawers, shoe shelves and an island |
| Townhouse | Wire shelving, tight spare room | Closet system plus a Murphy bed or office built-ins |
Walk-in, reach-in and wardrobe closets
A designed walk-in plans each wall by what it holds: long hang for coats and dresses, double hang for shirts and pants, shelves for folded clothes and a bank of drawers. Shoe shelves, jewelry drawers, belt and tie pull-outs and a hamper can be built in, and larger rooms can take an island.
Reach-ins are where most South Jersey homes gain the most. Replacing a single rod with double hanging, adjustable shelving and a few drawers lets a small closet hold a season’s wardrobe. In rooms with no closet, a wardrobe closet designed to the wall adds the same storage without framing anything new.
Kids’ rooms and shared closets
Postwar homes in Cherry Hill and townhouses in Voorhees often have smaller secondary bedrooms, and a kids’ closet has to change as the child does. An adjustable system starts with low rods and shelves within reach and moves up over time, with bins that hold toys at first and sports gear later. When two children share a room, one closet can be split into two sides, each with its own hanging space, shelves and drawers, which cuts down on arguments about whose things are whose.
Linen, coat and hall closets
The smaller closets around the house are easy to overlook. A hall linen closet with deep shelves is hard to use because things get lost at the back. Shelves set at the right depth with a few drawers fix that. A coat closet by the front door can add a shoe shelf, a rod at the right height and a shelf for hats and gloves, so the entry stays clear.
Murphy beds for guest rooms and home offices
Many South Jersey homeowners have a spare room that sits empty most of the year. A Murphy bed folds into a cabinet against the wall, so the room works as a home office, playroom or gym and still sleeps guests. Shelving or cabinets on either side add storage around it.
Garages, pantries and laundry rooms
- Garages. Cabinets, slatwall and a workbench get tools, bikes and sports gear off the floor. See our garage storage systems.
- Pantries. Adjustable shelving and pull-out storage make a narrow kitchen pantry usable from floor to ceiling.
- Laundry rooms and mudrooms. Cabinets, folding space, lockers and benches keep the busiest entry and work areas in order.
- Home offices and entertainment centers. Built-ins that hold more than freestanding furniture in the same space.
What goes into a Closets For Less system
Each system is custom designed for the space and installed by our own team. We use 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers, and many finishes and hardware options so the closet matches the room. You review the design before anything is built and can ask for changes until it fits.
Working with a Pennsylvania company in New Jersey
We are based in Warminster, Pennsylvania, and work on both sides of the river. The process is the same in New Jersey as in Pennsylvania: a free in-home consultation where we measure the space and talk through what you store, a design you can review and revise, and an installation by our own team. Our own team installs the approved design.
What custom closets cost in South Jersey
The price depends on four things:
- How big the space is and how many of its walls need storage.
- How many drawers you want, since a drawer costs more than a shelf.
- The finish and hardware.
- Accessories such as islands, pull-outs and shoe walls.
There is no charge to design or price the project. Our custom closet cost guide explains each factor.
South Jersey towns we serve
In Collingswood, early 1900s homes near Haddon Avenue have small closets that need careful planning, plus pantries in older kitchens. In Cherry Hill, split-levels and colonials from the postwar decades get full reach-in rebuilds and garage storage. In Voorhees, newer homes and townhouses trade their wire shelving for complete closet systems, and spare rooms become offices with Murphy beds.
