A custom closet costs about $1,080 to $3,229 for most projects, with a national average of $2,136, according to HomeAdvisor’s 2026 cost guide. Fully built-out systems run higher: Fixr’s 2025 guide puts most at $2,500 to $5,000, and walk-ins at $5,000 to $10,000. These are national averages, not Closets For Less prices. Custom closet cost by closet type
The type of closet sets the starting point, because it decides how much wall gets storage. These ranges are national averages from Fixr’s custom closet installation guide (updated January 2025):
| Closet type | National average range (installed) |
|---|---|
| Free-standing wardrobe | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| Reach-in closet | $1,200 to $5,000 |
| Built-in closet | $1,200 to $10,000 |
| Walk-in closet | $5,000 to $10,000 |
Fixr’s typical project is an 8-foot reach-in with painted MDF shelves, accessories and cabinets at about $3,500. HomeAdvisor’s 2026 guide reports lower figures for simpler projects: $500 to $1,500 for a reach-in and $750 to $5,000 for a walk-in. The two sources measure different mixes of projects, which is why the ranges do not match. A basic shelf-and-rod reach-in and a walk-in with an island are both called “custom closets.”
Custom closet cost per linear foot
Closet systems are usually priced by the linear foot of wall they cover, not by floor area, because almost everything mounts on the walls. Fixr reports $150 to $450 per linear foot, depending on design and materials. You can use that range as a rough calculator:
| Wall covered | At $150 per linear foot | At $450 per linear foot |
|---|---|---|
| 6 ft reach-in | $900 | $2,700 |
| 8 ft reach-in | $1,200 | $3,600 |
| 12 ft (small walk-in, one long wall) | $1,800 | $5,400 |
| 20 ft (walk-in, two walls) | $3,000 | $9,000 |
This is arithmetic on a published national range, not a quote. Two closets with the same wall length can land far apart depending on what goes on the wall.
What affects custom closet cost
| Cost factor | Lower cost | Higher cost |
|---|---|---|
| Closet type | Reach-in, one wall | Walk-in or dressing room, several walls |
| Size | Short wall run | Long runs, tall ceilings, corners |
| Materials | Laminate or melamine | MDF, plywood, cedar or wood veneer |
| Drawers and accessories | Open shelving and rods | Drawer banks, islands, hampers, valet rods, jewelry trays |
| Doors | Open system | Cabinet doors, glass fronts, mirrored doors |
| Installation | Clean, square, empty closet | Removing old shelving, drywall repair, trim changes, hardwired lighting |
Fixr’s 2025 figures put some of these in numbers: drawers at about $75 to $200 each installed, an island at $1,000 to $2,500, and sensor lights at $200 to $500 per light installed.
Materials
Common closet materials include laminate, melamine, MDF, plywood, cedar and real wood veneer, plus glass for doors and metal for rods and hardware. Fixr lists laminate from about $125 per linear foot and wood veneer up to about $1,200. Closets For Less builds with 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers, in many finishes.
Drawers, doors and accessories
Drawers are usually the biggest single upgrade, because each one adds a box, a front and slides. Our closet drawer systems page explains how to size them. Cabinet doors, glass fronts and islands add the most cost after drawers. Many homeowners put drawers where they are used every day and open shelves everywhere else.
Installation and site prep
Ask what the quote includes before you compare. Removing wire shelving, patching drywall, painting, changing baseboards and running power for lighting may or may not be in the price, and some may need a separate contractor.
Custom closet brands compared
Big-box stores and national closet companies are the comparisons people search for most. The figures below are third-party estimates, not quotes from these companies; some companies also publish starting prices or example designs.
| Company | Published estimate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| The Home Depot | $1,500 to $20,000; $150 to $345 per linear foot | HomeLight, November 2024, citing The Home Depot |
| Closet Factory (Costco’s listed partner) | $135 to $330 per linear foot | Fixr, January 2025 |
| California Closets | $175 to $350 per linear foot | Fixr, January 2025 |
| Closets by Design | $150 to $400 per linear foot | Fixr, January 2025 |
| The Container Store | $150 to $600 per linear foot | Fixr, January 2025 |
| IKEA | $150 to $380 per linear foot | Fixr, January 2025 |
We found no published custom design price for Lowe’s or for Costco directly. Ranges this wide mean the brand matters less than the design, the materials and what installation includes. Compare written quotes line by line.
DIY closet kit or professional custom closet?
A DIY kit costs less in materials and suits a simple, square reach-in. The trade-off is your time: you measure, configure, cut and install it yourself, and kits come in fixed sizes that leave gaps at the walls.
A professional custom closet costs more but is designed for your exact walls, trim, corners and ceiling height and installed level and anchored by an experienced team. Fixr advises against doing custom closet work yourself.
If you are deciding whether to rework the closet you have or start over, our guide to closet remodeling vs. closet replacement walks through it.
Are custom closets worth it?
The clearest return is daily use: more storage in the same space, a dresser you no longer need, and a closet that stays organized. Resale value is harder to measure. A real estate agent quoted by HomeLight in 2024 said it is tough to assign a dollar value to a custom closet, but buyers notice what they lose when a home has poor storage. Our article on how custom closet installation adds value in Bucks County homes covers this in more detail.
