Custom closets for both sides of Yardley
Yardley Borough is a small river town on the Delaware, with the Delaware Canal running through it and a center of older homes on tree-lined streets. Most of the people with a Yardley address actually live in Lower Makefield Township around it, in the Pennsbury School District, where neighborhoods of two-story colonials and larger homes were built over the second half of the twentieth century and later.
Those two settings call for different closet plans. In the borough, the challenge is fitting real storage into older rooms. In the township, it is making a decent-sized closet work as well as it should.
Older borough homes: wardrobes and fitted reach-ins
Yardley’s older houses often have bedrooms with small closets or none at all, and upstairs rooms under sloped ceilings. Two approaches work well:
- Fitted reach-ins: shelves cut to the closet’s real depth, double hanging where the height allows, and drawers in the low spots under a slope
- Custom wardrobe closets: a built unit with hanging, shelves and drawers for a room with no closet, designed for the wall between windows and doors and finished to suit an older room
Lower Makefield colonials: closets that were never designed
The typical Lower Makefield colonial has a primary walk-in or a long double reach-in, plus a reach-in in each other bedroom, all fitted with one rod and one shelf. We redesign them from the walls in:
- Walk-ins with double and long hanging, shoe shelving, adjustable shelves, and a drawer tower or island
- Kids’ and guest room reach-ins with adjustable rods and shelves that can change with the room
- Linen and coat closets with shelving and bins that keep things from toppling
Drawers that replace a dresser
Built-in drawers are one of the most useful upgrades in any Yardley closet. They move folded clothes into the closet and free up bedroom floor space. Our page on closet drawer systems covers sizes and layouts. Soft-close drawers are an option, built into a system made from 3/4 inch furniture-grade boards.
| Yardley closet | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Borough bedroom with no closet | Custom wardrobe closet |
| Borough reach-in under a slope | Shelves cut to depth, drawers in low spots |
| Lower Makefield primary walk-in | Island or drawer tower, double and long hanging, shoe shelves |
| Long double reach-in | Split zones for two people, drawers in the middle |
| Kids’ reach-in | Adjustable rods and shelves |
Do custom closets add value?
A custom closet stays with the house, and organized closets are something buyers notice. Our post on how custom closet installation adds value to Bucks County homes looks at this in more depth. Most Yardley homeowners do it first for their own daily use.
Beyond closets
We also design pantries, mudrooms, laundry rooms, garage cabinets and workbenches, home offices, entertainment centers and Murphy beds.
Mudrooms off the garage in Lower Makefield
Most Lower Makefield colonials have an attached garage with a door into a laundry room or back hall, and that is where the family actually comes and goes. Coats, backpacks, shoes and sports bags pile up there fast. We design that entry as a mudroom: a locker or open bay for each person, hooks at kid height, a bench with shoe cubbies underneath and cabinets up high for hats, gloves and seasonal gear. In a narrow hall, even a shallow bench and hook rail makes a difference.
