Closet organizers for Glenside’s twins and colonials
Glenside straddles Cheltenham and Abington townships and grew up around its train station, with a small downtown near the Keswick Theatre and Arcadia University on its edge. Its homes are mostly early and mid-1900s: stone and brick twins, Tudor-style singles, colonials and Cape Cods on tree-lined blocks.
Those houses share one trait. The closets were sized for a time when a family owned a fraction of what it owns now. A typical Glenside bedroom closet is a narrow reach-in with a single rod and a shelf above the door line, and everything else ends up on the floor or in a dresser.
How we organize a Glenside reach-in
A reach-in closet is a small space, so each part of it needs a job. Here is one way to divide one:
- Upper shelves to the ceiling for out-of-season clothes and storage bins
- Double hanging across most of the width for shirts and folded pants
- A short run of long hanging for dresses, coats or suits
- A drawer stack with soft-close drawers, which often means a dresser can leave the room
- Shoe shelving at the bottom instead of a pile on the floor
Everything is adjustable, so the closet can change when a nursery becomes a teenager’s room. Our reach-in closets page has more layouts, and our post on reach-in closet organization ideas covers ideas you can use right away.
Walk-in closets and primary suites
Some Glenside homes have had a primary suite added or an extra bedroom turned into a walk-in. In those spaces we design hanging on two levels, drawer towers, shoe shelving and open shelves, with an island where the room allows. See our walk-in closets page for options.
Wardrobes for rooms without closets
Third-floor rooms and finished attics in older Glenside homes sometimes have no closet, or only a small one tucked under the eaves. A built-in wardrobe closet along one wall gives you hanging, shelves and drawers in a single unit sized to that wall, and we can lower it to fit under a sloped ceiling. The same approach works in a finished basement bedroom, where a wardrobe can be built around a window well or a low soffit and give a teenager or guest a proper place for clothes.
Linen closets and bathroom storage
Glenside bathrooms in older homes are often small, and the linen closet in the hall has to hold towels, sheets, toiletries and cleaning supplies at once. Fixed shelves set far apart waste most of that space. We replace them with adjustable shelves spaced for what you store: shallow gaps for washcloths and toiletries, taller ones for folded sheets and towels. Pull-out baskets near the floor hold cleaning supplies and backup paper goods, and a deep lower shelf can take a laundry basket. If the closet sits at the top of the stairs or under a slope, the shelving follows the shape so nothing is lost behind it.
Pantries, entries and garages
Older kitchens rarely have a pantry, and many back doors open straight into the kitchen. We design:
- Pantry shelving with pull-out baskets in an existing closet or kitchen corner
- Entry storage with hooks, cubbies and a bench where coats and bags land
- Garage cabinets and slatwall for detached and attached garages alike
Our garage storage in Montgomery County page covers the garage side in more detail.
Built to last in an older house
Older Glenside walls are rarely square, so we measure in several places before drawing anything, and the design can be revised until it fits your needs and budget. Our own installers build it in. Every system uses 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers, and many finishes and hardware options. Homeowners rate us 4.8 stars on Google.
