Custom closets for Dresher’s split-levels and colonials
Dresher is a quiet part of Upper Dublin Township, between Fort Washington, Maple Glen and Horsham, in the Upper Dublin School District and close to Twining Valley Park. Much of its housing went up in the decades after World War II: split-levels, ranches and two-story colonials, followed by larger colonials from the 1980s and 1990s.
Each of those home styles has its own closet habits:
- Split-levels have bedrooms on the upper level with modest reach-ins and a lower level that often serves as a family room or home office with little built-in storage.
- Ranches keep all the bedrooms on one floor, usually with small reach-ins and a single hall linen closet.
- Later colonials have primary walk-ins, but most were finished with a wire shelf and one rod.
Reach-in closets for split-levels and ranches
The reach-in is the closet most Dresher families use every day. We lay it out in zones so each part has a job:
| Zone | Use |
|---|---|
| Shelves above, to the ceiling | Out-of-season clothing, bins |
| Double hanging | Shirts and pants |
| Long hanging | Dresses and coats |
| Drawers | Folded clothes and accessories |
| Low shelf | Shoes |
All shelving is adjustable, so the closet can be reset when a child’s room becomes a guest room. See our reach-in closets page for more.
Walk-in closets for larger colonials
In a 1980s or 1990s colonial, the primary walk-in usually has plenty of square footage and very little organization. A custom walk-in closet can include hanging at two heights, a drawer tower with soft-close drawers, shoe shelving, open shelves and an island in wider rooms, with accessories like a divided jewelry drawer, valet rod or built-in hamper.
Custom made wardrobes
Finished lower levels in split-levels and basements in colonials are often used as guest rooms or teen bedrooms with no closet. A built-in wardrobe closet gives those rooms hanging, shelves and drawers in a unit sized to one wall. Wardrobes also help in bedrooms where the original closet is simply too small.
Custom pantries
Kitchen pantries in older Dresher homes are often a narrow closet with fixed shelves too far apart. We replace them with adjustable shelving set at useful heights, pull-out baskets for snacks and produce, and space for small appliances. Where there is no pantry, a tall cabinet in a kitchen corner can serve the same purpose. See our custom pantry page for options.
Making the most of a split-level lower level
The lower level of a Dresher split-level is often the family room, home office and storage area all at once, usually with little built-in storage to support those jobs. We design built-ins that give each use its own space. A wall of cabinets with shelving above can hold games, books and media around a TV. A desk with file drawers can tuck into a corner for homework or remote work. Tall cabinets near the garage door take sports equipment and cleaning supplies. Because lower levels can run cooler and damper than the rest of the house, closed cabinets keep stored items cleaner than open shelving alone. The result is a room the family can use without the clutter.
Garage and laundry storage
Attached garages get tall cabinets, wall cabinets, workbenches and slatwall to clear the floor. Laundry rooms, often off the kitchen or in the basement, get upper cabinets, a folding counter and a rod for hanging clothes.
Materials
Every system uses 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers, in many finishes and hardware options. Each closet is measured in person and designed for that room, and our own installers build it in. We are locally owned, based in Warminster, and rated 4.8 stars on Google.
