Closet systems for Elkins Park’s older homes
Elkins Park took shape in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when wealthy Philadelphia families built estates along the railroad north of the city. The streets that grew up around those estates are lined with large stone and stucco homes, Tudor and colonial revival houses, and solid brick twins. They are beautiful houses, and almost none of them were built with modern closets.
Common problems in Elkins Park houses:
- Closets that are deep but narrow, with a small door and a lot of space you cannot reach
- Plaster walls that are not square, so off-the-shelf systems leave gaps or will not fit
- Bedrooms with no closet at all, especially on third floors and in converted sunrooms
- Sloped ceilings in upper-floor rooms under the roof
Each of these has a design answer. Deep closets get pull-out baskets and shelves on the side walls so nothing gets lost in the back. Out-of-square walls are measured at several points and the system is designed to those measurements. Rooms with no closet get a built-in wardrobe closet along one wall.
Custom closet organization, room by room
Primary bedroom closets
When a primary suite has been remodeled into a walk-in, we lay out hanging at two heights, a drawer tower, shoe shelving and open shelves. A divided jewelry drawer and a valet rod are popular additions. Our walk-in closets page shows the full set of options.
Bedroom reach-ins
Most Elkins Park bedrooms have a single reach-in. A reach-in closet system with double hanging, adjustable shelves above and a small drawer stack can replace a dresser and free up wall space in the room.
Linen and hall closets
Hall closets in older homes tend to be tall and shallow. Adjustable shelves set at the right spacing for towels and sheets, with a few pull-out baskets near the bottom, make them far easier to use.
Beyond the bedroom
| Space | What we design |
|---|---|
| Pantry | Shelving and pull-outs fitted to an existing closet or kitchen corner |
| Mudroom or back entry | Cubbies, hooks, a bench and shoe storage |
| Home office | Desk, file drawers and shelving built into a spare room or alcove |
| Library or den | Built-in shelving and cabinets |
| Garage | Cabinets, workbench and slatwall |
Working around radiators, windows and trim
Older Elkins Park rooms come with features a new house does not have: cast-iron radiators under windows, wide original trim, built-in window seats and doors that swing into the closet. A good design respects those details instead of fighting them. When we measure, we note every radiator, window, outlet and switch, and the layout is drawn around them. A wardrobe closet can stop short of a radiator, a shelving unit can frame a window, and drawer fronts can be planned so they clear the door casing. You choose finishes and hardware that suit the room, so the new storage looks like it belongs in a house of that age.
Materials and finishes
Every system is built from 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers. With many finishes and hardware options, we can match a traditional interior with warm tones and classic pulls or keep a renovated space clean and simple.
A local company, start to finish
The person who measures your Elkins Park closet works for us, and so do the people who install it. Nothing is handed to an outside crew, and nothing is ordered until you have seen the design and are happy with it. We are locally owned, based in Warminster, and rated 4.8 stars on Google.
