Built-in closet systems for Lafayette Hill homes
Lafayette Hill is part of Whitemarsh Township, between Plymouth Meeting, Conshohocken, Flourtown and the Philadelphia line. Much of the housing is older than in the newer suburbs farther out: stone and brick colonials, Cape Cods, and mid-century split-levels and ranches, with some newer infill on the side streets.
Older houses were built when people owned fewer clothes, and their closets show it. Bedroom closets are often shallow, the doors are narrow, and the primary closet may be a reach-in no wider than a single rod. A built-in closet system is the most efficient way to fix that, because it is sized to the inch and fastened to the walls instead of standing in the middle of a small space.
What goes into a built-in closet
A built-in replaces the original rod and shelf with sections planned for what you store.
| Section | What it holds | Why it helps in an older closet |
|---|---|---|
| Double hanging | Shirts, pants, skirts | Doubles hanging space in the same width |
| Drawer stack | Folded clothes, accessories | Can replace a dresser in a small bedroom |
| Adjustable shelves | Sweaters, bags, bins | Uses the height above the rod |
| Shoe shelving | Everyday shoes | Gets shoes off the floor |
We build every system from 3/4” furniture-grade boards, with options including adjustable shelving and soft-close drawers. Our closet drawer systems page shows the drawer and insert options in more detail.
Closets for colonials and Cape Cods
Colonials usually have several small bedroom closets and one larger primary closet. The primary can be planned as a small walk-in with towers on each wall, and give the bedroom closets double hanging and a drawer stack. In Cape Cods, the second floor has sloped ceilings and knee walls, so closets are short on one side. We step the shelving down to follow the slope, and use the low side for drawers and shoes.
If a room has almost no closet at all, which is common in older houses, a wardrobe closet adds hanging and drawer space without opening walls.
Closets in mid-century split-levels and ranches
Not every Lafayette Hill home is old stone. The split-levels and ranches built in the middle of the last century have their own closet pattern: several small bedroom reach-ins with sliding or bifold doors, a hall linen closet, and a coat closet at the entry. Sliding doors mean you only ever see half the closet at a time, so we design those closets in two halves, each with its own purpose, such as hanging on one side and a drawer stack with shelves on the other. Bifold doors open fully, which makes room for a centered drawer tower.
The lower level of a split-level is often a family room with a closet that collects everything nobody knows where to put. Fitting it with adjustable shelves and cabinets turns it into storage for games, seasonal items and supplies.
Wall units and built-in shelving
Built-ins are not only for closets. Many Lafayette Hill homes have family rooms and dens that benefit from a shelving wall with closed cabinets below, or a home entertainment center that holds the television, media equipment and games. We use the same boards and finishes as our closets, so a wall unit can match the closets upstairs.
Pantries, mudrooms and garages
Older kitchens rarely have a walk-in pantry, so we design reach-in pantries with adjustable shelves and pull-outs. Side and back entries can take a mudroom bench with cubbies and hooks. Garages get cabinets, workbenches and slatwall to clear the floor.
What it costs and how to start
The cost of a built-in closet in Lafayette Hill depends on the closet’s size, the number of drawers and accessories, and the finish. Our custom closet cost guide explains each factor, and the estimate you receive after the free consultation is specific to your home.
