Custom mudroom storage gives every family member a place to drop coats, bags and shoes at the door, so they never reach the rest of the house. Closets For Less designs and installs mudroom lockers, benches, cubbies and shoe storage across Montgomery County and the Main Line. We measure your entry at a free in-home consultation and show you a 3D design you can revise before anything is ordered.
Why Montgomery County homes need a real mudroom
Snow, slush, road salt and spring mud all come in through the door. Standard furniture and wire racks do not hold up to that for long. A well-planned mudroom works like an airlock: wet boots and dirty paws stop at the door instead of damaging hardwood floors and carpets. Catching the mess at the entry cuts cleaning time and protects the inside of the house.
Mudroom layouts for Montgomery County homes
You do not need a big room. We fit mudroom storage to the entry you have:
| Your home | Where the mudroom usually goes |
|---|---|
| Older stone or brick colonial on the Main Line or in Abington or Cheltenham | A back hall or side entry, often narrow, with walls that are not square |
| Twin or rowhome in Conshohocken, Norristown, Ambler or Lansdale | One wall of a rear hallway or kitchen entry, with shallow cabinets and recessed hooks |
| Postwar or newer home with an attached garage | The garage entry or the laundry room beside it |
| Newer townhome | A hallway wall near the garage door |
- The garage entry is the most practical spot, because it catches the mess before it reaches the living space.
- Laundry room combinations let dirty sports uniforms go straight into the wash. See our laundry room and mudroom page for those designs.
- Hallway conversions turn a narrow hall into a wall of storage with shallow cabinets and recessed hooks.
What goes into a mudroom
Lockers and cubbies
Every family member gets their own zone, which ends the morning hunt for a missing shoe. Lockers have sturdy hooks for heavy winter coats and full backpacks, and upper cabinets hold off-season items like beach towels or winter scarves.
Built-in benches and shoe storage
A bench gives everyone a place to sit while putting on or taking off boots. Below it go adjustable shoe shelves or deep pull-out drawers. For wet weather, a water-resistant boot tray catches melting snow and protects the cabinetry. Our custom shoe closets page has more shoe storage options.
Matching the house
We match the mudroom to your home with trim, crown molding and baseboard details, so it looks original to the house rather than added later. Hardware runs from brushed nickel hooks to matte black pulls.
Solving everyday family problems
- Charging stations: outlets inside a drawer or locker charge phones and tablets without cords on the counter. Adding an outlet may need an electrician, and we plan for it in the design.
- Sports gear: lacrosse, soccer and hockey are popular here, so we design tall slots for sticks and room for oversized bags.
- Pets: a nook for food bowls, a cabinet for food, and hooks for leashes give pets their own zone outside the kitchen.
Materials that survive winter
Flat-pack laminate furniture is cheap, but it often peels or swells when it gets wet. We build with 3/4” furniture-grade boards that resist scratches and wipe down after a muddy week, and we raise the lowest shelves off the floor near the door.
Planning your mudroom
Count the people who use the entry, and the pets. Each person needs at least one hook for a coat and one for a bag, plus a spot for daily shoes. Then list the seasonal gear: winter boots, hats and gloves, umbrellas, sports equipment. That count tells us how many lockers or cubbies you need and how wide each one should be.
Next, decide how open it should be. Open cubbies are easy for kids to use. Lockers with doors hide the mess, which matters when the mudroom is in view of the kitchen. Many families mix both: open hooks and a bench below, closed cabinets above.
Mudrooms in older homes
Older Montgomery County homes rarely came with a mudroom. The back door often opens straight into the kitchen or a narrow hall. A shallow wall unit with hooks, a slim bench and cubbies above can fit in a hallway only a few feet wide, and a corner unit can fit beside a back door where there is no full wall. Plaster walls and uneven floors are common, so we measure carefully and fit the unit to the room.
Mudroom storage also helps when the house goes on the market. A clean, organized entry is one of the first things visitors see, and built-in storage at the door shows buyers where coats, shoes and bags will go. Until then, it simply makes every school morning and every rainy afternoon easier.
